Croda is seeking an Applications Scientist to join our Health Care Research & Technology Team in our Edison, NJ innovation center.  The Applications Scientist – Health Care will be responsible for conducting directed research into generating new products and processes supporting the development of new excipients for the pharmaceutical market.

This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to work within an expanding team in a growing business.  The individual will work closely with their fellow team members in generating new products and processes.  In doing so, they will be expected to develop their skills in a variety of fields of pharmaceutical excipient development.  All other duties will be assigned by management

 

Laboratory Activities (80%)

  • Assist with the daily responsibility for the smooth operation and maintenance of the group’s super-refining systems and associated instrumentation within the Health Care laboratory at Edison, interpreting data, generating reports and providing support, as defined by assigned priority, ensuring timely completion.
  • Provide skilled support in the development of new purification techniques and products, assisting in data generation and interpretation as required.
  • Serve as technical resource in supporting the smooth transfer of new products and processes to regional production sites.
  • Identify, develop and implement new purification techniques and approaches that benefit the business.

 

Marketing and sales technical support (10%)

  • Execute technology plan in supports of business needs.
  • Build external relationships within academia and professional/trade associations.
  • Generate high quality data for promotional literature, trade shows, literature, data generation, papers, publications

 

Technical Service (10%)

  • Provide support of existing business, including problem solving and addressing customer questions
  • Provide for ongoing manufacturing and purchasing support.
  • Support scale up and commercialization of new products.
  • Train and support team members in hands-on use of selected instruments

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Graduate degree (M.S. or PhD preferred) in Chemistry, Chemical or Process Engineering or related field or 3 years of relevant laboratory experience
  • Experience in new product and process development (particularly purification) is desired, preferably in the fine chemical, pharmaceutical or consumer care industry.
  • Good laboratory skills and an aptitude in process scale up and transfer to production, is clearly desirable.
  • The candidate must be able and willing to travel to other manufacturing sites (including overnight stays as required) in order to participate and assist with all project transfer projects assigned to them.  
  • Skills in performing core wet chemistry and related analytical techniques, critically reviewing and interpreting data and making appropriate decisions based on results are expected.
  • The candidate should have an understanding of the underlying science behind emulsions, dispersions and their stability, and an appreciation of the role of excipients in drug formulations and the importance and potential impact of excipient purity.
  • Good interpersonal skills, a self-starter capable of independent work but keen to work as part of a global team.
  • Good communication skills are essential (written and verbal) as participating in discussions and seminars (internally and externally) is expected.
  • Physically capable of standing to work at the laboratory bench for up to 7 hours a day
