A vacancy has arisen for a Principal EC&I Engineer within the team based in Harwell.

  • Support to MOD in various areas and projects

Principal Engineer Role Overview:

As a senior member of the Engineering Design Management Team, you will manage EC&I design engineering resources in the Harwell office to ensure design delivery to projects and adherence to design processes and standards.

Key responsibilities as a Principal Engineer:

  • Liaison with the Intelligent Customer
  • Develop and reinforce the safety culture
  • Governance of the Engineering deliverables
  • Checking/Approval of documents and drawings
  • Regularly interacts with clients and managers of other engineering disciplines
  • Compliance with safety regulations (e.g. CDM and CE marking)
  • Develop cost effective technical solutions
  • Leading the team to effectively meet the defined engineering scope
  • Guiding technical solutions
  • Experience in the application of Safety Related Systems to engineering design
  • As Chief Discipline Engineer you will communicate best practice across the UK EC&I design delivery team.

Position of the Principal Engineer within the organisation:

  • Delivery of all design and engineering to meet requirements.
  • Responsible for managing the quality, and progress of EC&I engineering work carried out within a project
  • Definition and distribution of the scope of design work to ensure that all work is executed safely, on time and at appropriate levels of quality and cost.
  • Ensuring that all design work is delivered in accordance with the Project Procedures
  • On behalf of the Engineering Manager, carry out interviews for recruitment of EC&I engineers.

Ideally you will have the following qualifications, skills, experience and attributes…

Essential:

  • Degree Qualified
  • Full Membership of a relevant institution (e.g. IET).
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Experience in a senior role in the management and delivery of nuclear environment projects, or other equivalent highly regulated industry.
  • High knowledge of Statutory and Safety Regulations and their appropriate utilisation.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering design solutions.
  • Management of EC&I design teams.
  • High level of commercial awareness.
  • Ability in the leadership of a technical team within a project delivery environment.
  • Organisation and collaboration skills when working to challenging project deadlines.
  • Proven track record within a complex project environment with strong organisational & interpersonal skills.
  • Able to develop engineering capability in support of bid returns

Desirable:

  • Fellow of a discipline specific institution (e.g IET).
  • MSc in a relevant mechanical subject.
  • Chartered Engineer registration
  • A recognised qualification in leadership and management
  • Expertise in the nuclear industry.
  • Concept through to commissioning experience (full lifecycle), including inspection and installation.
  • Good understanding of Statutory and safety Regulations and their appropriate use.
  • Good knowledge of requirements management
  • Good knowledge of Systems Engineering (E.g. Capella)
  • Recruitment experience.
  • Proven track record within a project environment with strong organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Good customer/client liaison skills and good commercial awareness.
  • Expert understanding of EC&I principles such as safety systems, circuit protection, communication technologies or instrumentation.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of the organisation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Good methodical and accurate approach to problem solving.
  • Experience of the management of sub-contractors involved in the design process.
  • Human Factors knowledge.
  • Full UK driving license.
