PML is seeking to appoint 2 enthusiastic, highly motivated and experienced Social Science Researchers to join our ‘Sea and Society’ group. You will provide social and economic science support for existing staff to deliver on currently funded projects involving stakeholder engagement and primary data collection, and to support similar projects in the future.

The Sea and Society group, one of five science areas at The Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), is one of the largest, dedicated marine social science groups in Europe and is at the forefront of marine ecosystem service research. The Sea and Society group undertakes research on the consequences and benefits of the interactions between society and the marine environment to support sustainable and responsible ocean stewardship. We aim to increase the use of social science research in exploring issues such as motivations for engagement in sustainable practice in the marine environment, and the health and wellbeing benefits of the sea.

The Plymouth Marine Laboratory is a dynamic, highly innovative and impartial provider of research and advice relating to coasts and oceans, globally and locally. It is an independent research business with charitable status and a NERC Collaborative Centre. Researchers at PML collaborate externally with universities and research institutes across the UK and internationally such that PML has been an integral part of the UK’s strategic marine science capability for over 30 years. We are located in Plymouth, SW England with beautiful coast and countryside all around the city.

The role will require you to undertake high quality, specialist, social science research, including supporting the delivery of existing projects such as NERC ADVENT, RCUK GCRF Blue Communities (in SE Asia), NERC SWEEP: South West Partnership for Environment & Economic Prosperity, Interreg projects and Horizon 2020 European projects. The work will be undertaken under the supervision of other social and economic scientists and in collaboration with environmental scientists at PML and elsewhere.

Key Deliverables:

  • To support existing projects in the delivery of social science research including stakeholder engagement, primary and secondary data collection;
  • To support delivery of Official Development Assistance (ODA) relevant research involving stakeholders and the general public;
  • To provide support in the preparation of proposals and development of future funding streams;
  • To contribute to outreach, dissemination and impacts of PML research;
  • To contribute to high quality publications;

Experience & Eligibility:

You will have:

  • Skills and experience in at least one of the following areas:
    • Qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis
    • Survey techniques
    • Literature review and analysis
    • Participatory research methods
    • Stakeholder engagement
    • Overseas (especially developing country) fieldwork experience
  • Excellent undergraduate degree or Master’s in social science, economics, or geography
  • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly in a highly interdisciplinary environment and to non-specialists.

You will have some experience as a research assistant in an interdisciplinary team including economists and other social scientists or natural scientists.

Experience to produce or co-produce scientific papers for publication in journals, and project reports is desirable.

You may be required to travel within the UK and overseas.
