Scientist Grade: £29,874 - £35,346 

 3 full time one- year Appointments with anticipation of extension

PML is looking for three dynamic, remote-sensing scientists to work on a number of new national and international research and development projects in the PML Earth Observation science group. The projects focus on research and development of satellite data analysis and processing methods for monitoring water quality in inland, coastal, transitional and open-ocean water bodies from the regional up to the global scale.

Scientific areas include: high resolution remote sensing of coastal suspended particulates, eutrophication indices, floating seaweed and aquaculture sites; monitoring of lakes globally and regionally in India; and open-ocean observation of the ocean carbon cycle. The work will use satellite data at medium (300m) and high-resolution (up to 10m) in a cutting-edge computing environment.

The posts are initially for one-year, but given the on-going success of the PML EO group, extension for longer duration is anticipated, although not guaranteed.  

Key Deliverables for the 3 posts:

  • Analyses of Earth Observation data and development of scientific methods dealing with: different sensors and configurations, or atmospheric and biogeochemical retrieval algorithms for water; data processing, theoretical optical modelling, product development or statistical analysis.
  • Scientific reporting (oral, written) and presentation of results.

Experience & Eligibility Requirements

The appointments will be made at PML Scientist grade and candidates will possess a PhD or equivalent experience in limnology, oceanography, Earth Observation or a similar numerical field (mathematics, statistics, computing, or physics). The successful candidates will need to demonstrate strong computing skills as appropriate for quantitative remote sensing research and development (most of PML’s software is implemented in Python and PostgreSQL) as well as numerical and mathematical skills. Each of the successful candidates will be matched with the ongoing projects that are best suited to their skills, training needs and interests. The post holders will need to work individually or in a team, as required, be self-motivated, with good communication skills, including scientific writing.
